<p>The first phase of the Port Access Northern Cross Route (PANCR) highway scheme has broken ground in Drogheda, County Louth. The road’s strategic placement will improve access to residential-zoned development areas in North Drogheda, opening them up to deliver much needed additional housing.</p>



<p>The first phase of the PANCR comprises two km of new roadway, together with two roundabouts located on the intersections of the Twenties Lane and Ballymakenny Road. The works also include the upgrade of stretches of both Ballymakenny Road (1km) and Twenties Lane (0.6km).</p>



<p>We are proud to be the lead consultant for the project, which is seeing our specialists delivering rail bridge design, traffic analysis, road alignment (DMRB), drainage and outfalls, EIA services and compulsory land acquisition documentation. Our team has worked on the scheme for many years, and we are delighted to see construction now in progress and the road beginning to take shape.</p>

<p>The North Drogheda route comprises five km of single expandable carriageway, four at-grade roundabouts, new trunk watermains, new trunk foul sewer, new underpass beneath the Dublin-Belfast mainline railway, and associated earthworks.</p>



<p>The project was developed jointly by public/ private partnership with Louth County Council. Our strong relationship with all parties and stakeholders ensured practical solutions consistent with the requisite public procurement procedures.</p>



<p>We were appointed as Lead Consultant to provide Rail Bridge Design, Traffic Analysis, Road Alignment (DMRB), Drainage and outfalls EIA services and Compulsory Land Acquisition documentation.</p>



<p>The project has obtained development approval and the route has been acquired.</p>

<p>The Lusk Relief Road has been designed and constructed to relieve traffic from the centre of the historic village of Lusk in north Co. Dublin. The route loops around the East side of the village, linking the main Dublin Road to the south, with the Skerries Road to the north.</p>



<p>The road comprises two km of nine metres wide, two-lane single carriageway, with four roundabouts and modification of existing roads to tie into new roundabouts on the relief road. Extensive archaeological investigations were carried out prior to finalisation of the route and commencement of earthworks for the project.</p>



<p>Waterman Moylan was appointed as consulting civil engineers with responsibility for preliminary and detailed design, tender documentation and assessment in accordance with DOELG Procurement Procedures and contract administration.</p>



<p>The project was carried out by MMD Consortium for Fingal County Council under the vehicle of a Development Agreement.</p>

<p>Waterman Moylan provided design and construction administration services in connection with two road crossings over the new LUAS tram line at Balally, Dundrum.</p>



<p>The bridge works were part of a large mixed-use development at the site and were designed as integral structures to eliminate the need for bearings and movement joints, and thus the maintenance requirements that accompany these.</p>



<p>The new structures were formed from precast super TY beams with structural concrete toppings which sat on in-situ concrete abutment walls and 600 mm diameter CFA piles.</p>



<p>As Wyckham Bridge straddled a trunk water main, both abutments were designed to span a 10 m zone centred on the water main.<br>The simple form of the integral bridge design led to a very rapid construction period of five months, allowing all works to be completed ahead of the LUAS contractor taking possession of the cutting along which the track runs.</p>



<p>The project also included the extension of the Wyckham Bypass through the site which comprised the construction of a bus drop-off terminus at the new LUAS station and extensive modification to the very busy Sandyford Road/Wyckham Bypass. A combination of reinforced soil slopes, reinforced earth walls and in-situ reinforced concrete retaining walls was adopted to provide stability to the sides of the rail cutting through the site.</p>
