<p>One of Ireland’s premier coastal marinas, Malahide Marina offers 350 berths for local and visiting yachts and motor cruisers. Nestled in the estuary of the Broadmeadow River beside the charming Malahide village, the marina is protected from the sea by a floating breakwater system.</p>



<p>The project included seawalls, extensive dredging and land reclamation, floating berths, a boat hoist and fuelling station, Marina clubhouse and a restaurant located over water in the middle of the marina.</p>



<p>Our team was appointed to provide all marine, civil and structural engineering services.</p>

<p>Planning consent has been sought for a new cruise berth to cater for the latest generation cruise ships at Dun Laoghaire Harbour, Dublin.</p>



<p>Waterman Moylan was appointed to undertake the masterplanning and preliminary design of this major new facility.</p>



<p>The scheme is designed for 340m long 155,000 GT cruise ships and includes a new jetty, monopile breasting and mooring dolphins and a 2km long approach channel involving 700,000 m3 of dredging.</p>



<p>Our appointment to undertake the masterplanning was subsequently extended to take the design of the project through to the preparation of a planning application and an Environmental Impact Statement.</p>



<p>Project development was advanced in two stages, with an initial option appraisal followed by scheme design in parallel with the Environmental Impact Statement.</p>



<p>The option appraisal included a study of alternative fixed and floating type quay structures, different quay locations and options for dredging that minimise the impact on the existing listed structures.</p>



<p>The scheme design was completed for a fixed jetty structure and an optimised design for the approach channel which minimises the volume of dredging while at the same time providing safe access for the cruise ships. As part of the EIS, various ecological and archaeological surveys have been undertaken, as well as numerical modelling of the harbour to evaluate the potential changes in the wave climate, the current flows and the sedimentation regime and a range of other investigations.</p>



<p>Waterman Moylan was previously responsible for the design and procurement of berthing facilities to accommodate cruise tendering operations in the harbour, and as a result the Harbour received calls from Cunard Lines Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth in 2013 and has a growing schedule of calls from large cruise ships in 2015 and 2016.</p>

<p>The project involved the demolition and site clearance of approx. 4,000 sqm of steel framed warehouse structures and two-storey timber and masonry office/terminal buildings at Carlisle Pier, Dun Laoghaire Harbour.</p>



<p>Our team was appointed as Project Manager and as part of the PSDP team to plan and manage the demolition of the derelict ferry terminal buildings which had been disused for some time.</p>



<p>The demolition included removal of structures cantilevered off the edge of the pier and over the water and the careful disposal of the asbestos sheeting that the buildings were currently clad, in accordance with the specified regulations.</p>



<p>The team were also responsible for managing the procurement process in accordance with public procurement procedures, including prequalification of contractors and adoption of the GCCC contract for minor Building Works and Civil Engineering Works.</p>

<p>Berth 4, Dun Laoghaire Harbour project is the refurbishment of an existing disused ro-ro ferry berth (Berth 4) at St. Michael’s Pier in Dun Laoghaire Harbour. The disused Berth 4 was to be upgraded to accommodate the Stena Lynx III ferry.</p>



<p>Waterman Moylan was appointed to plan and manage the refurbishment. A mechanically controlled steel transition ramp spans from a berthing pontoon to the pier. The ramp was badly corroded, and the mechanics were no longer functioning.</p>



<p>Refurbishment works included site applied corrosion protection system to steel frame and tailgate, upgrade / replacement of the ramp and ramp control mechanics and also the refurbishment of the control building.</p>



<p>Damaged greenheart timber fenders along St. Michael’s Pier adjacent to Berth 4 were removed as part of the works and replaced with steel SHS pile sections which were driven 7 metres into the seabed. The embedded SHS piles spanned 15m above the seabed to the pier surface. Compression fenders and rubbing strips were fixed to the steel piles.</p>



<p>Raking fenders to the existing 190 sqm pontoon which serves Berth 4 were replaced as part of the contract works.</p>
