Waterman Moylan partners with Hometree to support woodland restoration in Ireland

The partnership will support Hometree’s community-led work to restore native ecosystems, boost biodiversity and create lasting environmental change across Ireland.

Waterman Moylan is pleased to announce that it has entered into a partnership with Hometree, the west of Ireland-based nature restoration organisation working to protect and regenerate the country’s remaining native woodlands. Through afforestation, conservation, ecosystem restoration and education, Hometree is helping to strengthen biodiversity while deepening connections between communities and the natural environment.

Hometree was founded with a vision to rebuild and sustain resilient ecosystems, with a particular focus on native temperate rainforest. While as much as 80% of Ireland was once covered in native wildwood, today it is one of the most deforested countries in Europe. Hometree is working to help change that.

Earlier this year, members of the Waterman Moylan’s team visited Hometree’s headquarters, including its tree nursery, where native Irish species are cultivated for reforestation projects. Our support will contribute to initiatives at the Cnocán Bán landholding in Connemara, where Hometree has acquired a 280-acre farm in a remote valley that was traditionally used for sheep farming.

Since taking ownership of the site, Hometree has worked closely with the local community to carry out ecological surveys and shape a targeted habitat restoration strategy. The charity has also delivered 30,000 native trees across Ireland, including Scots pine, willow and alder. In addition, Hometree supports the creation of new woodlands through their Wild Atlantic Rainforest Project protecting Ireland’s ancient oceanic forests.

Led by CEO Matt Smith, Hometree’s work is rooted in community partnership, bringing together education, collaboration and volunteering to restore native woodlands and support climate action across Ireland.

Commenting on the partnership, Smith said:

“The restoration of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Rainforest, one of Europe’s rarest and most distinctive ecosystems, is a long-term undertaking that depends on strong partnerships and sustained investment. Support from Waterman Moylan will help us advance critical restoration work, protecting biodiversity, strengthening ecosystem resilience and supporting the recovery of native woodlands for future generations. We are delighted to have their support as we continue to scale our impact.”

Paul O Connell, Managing Director at Waterman Moylan, said:

“We are very excited to support Hometree’s work and contribute to making a meaningful difference in land regeneration. Our partnership reflects a shared commitment to addressing biodiversity loss and climate change in a practical, community-focused way. Hometree’s approach, rooted in both science and community engagement, aligns closely with our own values, and we look forward to contributing to their incredible efforts at Cnocán Bán and beyond.”
