1,000 miles in nine days: Charity bike ride

Published 21st December 2022

As part of Waterman’s ongoing fundraising initiatives throughout the year, our COO Neil Humphrey cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, our Charity Partner for 2022-2023.

With industry colleagues Rob Fisher, Neil Cuthbertson and Jamie Davis, Neil covered c1,000 miles in nine days. Kitted out in cycling tops featuring logos of supporting companies, including Waterman, they set off on 30 September from John O’Groats reaching Land’s End on 8 October.

The group completed the same cycle but in reverse a decade ago and decided to once again embark on the journey to raise money following a terminal cancer diagnosis of one of their friends. First time round in 2012, Waterman joined corporate sponsors, friends and family to support Neil and the team as they went on to raise a significant amount of money for the charity, and the powerful story even made it onto the opening credits of the BBC’s coverage of the inaugural Ride London event.

In addition to Macmillan Cancer Support, the initiative also raised vital funds for “Off the Record”, a local charity that offers free and confidential counselling to young adults in South London.

Speaking from the finish line, Neil commented: “Although we had to tackle four amber weather warnings, 60mph head winds and torrential rain, we managed to safely complete the ride in sunshine, with a smile of relief on our faces. Overall, we covered 1,396km in the nine days, with 14,552m of climbing – equivalent of 1.6 times Everest. A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported us!”

The group raised over £45k for their efforts. Well done to Neil and his team!
